MHS varsity wrestlers placed fifth as a team in an invitational that included 16 schools at Faulkton on Saturday, December 14. Tate Schlueter took first place in his 175-pound weight class. Six other wrestlers reached the top-six places. Jesse Schneck earned second place; Lawson Novy, third place; Kyle Schneck and Joe French, fourth place; and Reese Rabe, sixth place. Owen Fischer also placed sixth in spite of an injury.

According to Josh Schmeichel, head coach for Milbank, “Owen started off the tournament with two falls, but during his semifinal match, he landed wrong on his knee and ended up medical forfeiting the rest of his matches.”

“Tate Schlueter pinned his way through the tournament for a first- place finish. Kyle Schneck had a good tournament. He was able to pull off an upset in the semis. From there, he was able to finish off the tournament in fourth-place,” Schmeichel commented. Jesse Schneck made his way to the finals with a fall and a close 5-3 decision. In the finals, he lost to finish the day in second place.

According to Schmeichel, Joe French had a tough 10-0 loss in the quarterfinals, but wrestled his way back into the battle for third place, including  a rematch with his quarterfinals opponent. He lost in a close 4-3 decision, but brought home fourth place. Reese Rabe had a decent tournament with a couple of good wins. He finished the tourney in sixth place. .

“Lawson Novy also had a good tournament,” said Schneichel. “He started off the day with a 6-3 decision before his only loss of the tournament. After that, he pinned his way back to a third-place finish.” Schmeichel noted that Lawson is a freshman wrestling in the 285-pound weight class. He is stepping up to fill in for his big brother Landon, who had wrestled in that same weight class for the Bulldogs for the past few years.
