Bulldogs at Mitchell
Bulldog wrestlers traveled to Mitchell on Saturday, January 18. “At Mitchell, we were able to see some really tough schools with Watertown, Rapid City Stevens, and Sturgis all there,” Coach Josh Schmeichel commented. ”We had some improvement and good things happen, but we also had some rough matches.”
Bulldogs Joe French and Oliver Korth each placed at the tournament. At 157 pounds, Joe started the day with a great win against the No. 5- ranked wrestler in the state at that time. According to Schmeichel, Joe was still struggling to get back his energy from a recent illness, but he secured a fourth-place finish.
“At 285, Oliver has started to make a name for himself this season,” Schmeichel said. Oliver went two and two to take home a fourth-place finish.
Freshman Andrew Karels was also given a shout-out for his drive to get better. “During the Mitchell Tournament, we saw big improvements with Andrew’s shots, counters, and confidence during his matches,” Schmeichel explained. He faced one opponent he had lost to 5-0 last week, but at Mitchell they were tied 5-5 in the third. Andrew ended up taking the loss, but only by a takedown.
Lady Bulldogs at Harrisburg
Lady Bulldog wrestlers traveled to Harrisburg on Friday, January 17, for an all-girls wrestling tournament. “Overall it was a great day for the girls,” commented Schmeichel. “At every tournament it is fun to see the progress they are making this season.”
Milbank entered two wrestlers in the JV 100-107-pound bracket. According to Schmeichel, Alondra Romero Mondragon was able to secure two falls before getting knocked out of the bracket by another Milbank wrestler, Andrea Luna Sanchez. Andrea recorded four wins and two losses to finish the tournament in fifth place. In the JV 120-pound bracket Ava Scavariel also secured a fifth-place finish.
At 138 pounds, Mackenzie Mueller had a tough bracket. “She ended up getting beat out of the tournament,” Schmeichel said. At 185 pounds, Kyra Tostenson beat two ranked wrestlers on her way to the finals. She eventually lost, but to the No.1-ranked girl.
