Sam Rick and Ryan Keeton exploded to rack up 38 points in the Bulldogs’ 56-44 victory over Dell Rapids on Saturday, January 18. Rick knocked in 21, and Keeton came off the bench to put away 17. Emmett Hanson also added eight points. Bryan Meyer made four. Graham Lightfield and Lincoln Holscher each drilled in a 3-pointer.

A deceptively slow start found Milbank trailing 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Milbank remained  behind – at one point they lagged by 11– but they managed to pull ahead 23 -21 going into the locker room at the half.   

In the third, Dell Rapids moved to within a point at 28-27 with 5:30 remaining on the clock. With just one minute to go in the third, the Bulldogs were ahead 33-29. The Dawgs then took those last 60 seconds and turned them into a Milbank minute. They went on an 8-0 blast to blow open a 41-29 gap to take with them into the fourth. Both teams scored 15 points in the final quarter to protect Milbank’s 12-point lead until the final buzzer.

“I’m proud of how our guys battled to end the week,” stated head coach Logan Diede. “We had some kids step up and make some huge shots against Dell Rapids, especially Ryan Keeton off the bench. And we had a collective group of guys flying around on defense and flying to the boards all game long!” 

Hanson recorded 10 boards and Jack Howard had nine. Lightfield grabbed three. Meyer and Holscher pulled down two apiece. Rick and Keeton each had one.

After struggling at the stripe and going four of nine in the first half, the Bulldogs looked sharp in the second half. They lined up for nine and sank eight for 89 percent. During the game, Rick also hit 10 of his 11 free throw attempts. 

For the Quarriers, Tad Tjaden scored 11 points. Jack Kloth made nine. Lincoln Anderson had eight. Karson Paye and Lincoln Fersdahl each scored six. Tjaden  recorded seven boards and Anderson had four.

JV Game–  Milbank 41 vs. Dell Rapids 38
Milbank’s JV team defeated Dell Rapids 41-38 on Saturday, January 18, in Dell Rapids. The Bulldogs led in the first quarter by a solid six at 12-6, but the Quarriers balanced things out in the second quarter to end the half tied at 16. 

Dell Rapids turned up the heat in the third to outscore Milbank 16 to three  and forge a 14-point lead that settled at 13 to close the quarter.The Bulldogs, however, got fired up in the fourth and poured in 22 points. They held Dell Rapids to six.

The Quarriers also missed nine of their 20 free throw attempts in what could have been game-changing points. The Bulldogs only received six chances at the line, but they secured four.

Ryan Keeton warmed up by scoring 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Lincoln Holscher put in 12, and Ethan Owen added nine. Jaxson Wiese made three. Braylen Bowsher dropped in two.

Jeter Scoular made five rebounds. Holscher had four. Keeton, Owen, Bowsher, Wiese, and Emmett Snaza each had two. Harley Zemlicka got one.

Milbank’s C team game against Dell Rapids would not have been as exciting if the Bulldogs had not put up a goose egg in the third quarter. The young Dawgs had built up a 24-16 lead by the half and were able to overcome their slight misstep in the third by rallying in the fourth to take it down to the wire for the win at 32-30.

Aiden Kelly and Jaxson Wiese each put up 12 points. Max Scoular scored four. Emmett Snaza and Bennett Hunter made two points apiece. Liam Street led the team in rebounds with five. Kelly and Snaza each had three. Scoular, Hunt and Max Engebretson had two apiece. Wiese got one.
