Three students of violin instructor Elizabeth Schulte performed in the Second Annual Northern Honors Orchestra in Aberdeen on Saturday, January 18. Students performed “Prelude” from Grieg’s Holberg Suite, “Fanfare and Chorale” by NSU professor William Wieland, “Adagio for Clarinet and String Orchestra” by Baermann, “Like the Wind” by Erika Svanoe, “Green Rhythmico” by Kirt Mosier, and “Suite for Strings” by English composer John Rutter.
The students were given less than three weeks to prepare difficult repertoire and prepare for seating auditions. Traci Tschetter was awarded third chair. Alana Wipf was awarded fourth chair, and Joseph Wipf was seated in the seventh chair in the second violin section. They joined 36 high school string players from Watertown, Huron, Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, and Omaha, Nebraska. Joseph, Traci and Alana are all homeschooled freshman. Joseph and Traci’s parents are Ryan and Elaine Tschetter of Revillo. Alana’s parents are Derek and Serena Wipf of Milbank.
Highlights of the two-day event also included a recital by Northern University students and faculty and coaching sessions with guest clinician Ruth Meints from Omaha.
