Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs Thrive at Brookings Tourney

The Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs competed in the 2025 Les Tlustos Tournament in Brookings on Saturday, February 1. The girls brought home 10th place and the boys finished at 12th. The Pierre Governors won both the boys and girls titles. In the girls division at 185, Kyra Tostenson of Milbank, was named the champion. 

Bulldogs Joe French and Tate Scchlueter each claimed a second-place finish. Oliver Korth earned a seventh-place finish. Jesse Schneck and Tayson Tillma each placed sixth. 

Josh Schneichel, head coach for MHS, said, “Joe had a good day.He got a tech fall and then a fall to make it to the finals.”  He  took the loss in the finals to a wrestler from Spencer Iowa. “Joe is one of our senior leaders on the team. He has had his ups and downs this year. He had to sit some time out with an illness but has been making a great comeback and all his hard work is showing,” Schmeichel said. “Joe is currently ranked sixth at 157.”

Tate pinned his way to the finals.  “During the semifinals match, Tate was out  to get revenge for a close loss earlier this year to a Sioux Falls Lincoln wrestler. According to Schmeichel, Tate went on to lose in a close match in the finals, but he sees it as  a valuable learning experience for the next time the two meet.

“We brought four girls to the tournament,” Schemichel noted. “The girls wrestled tough and finished off the day strong. They were all able to win their placing match.” For the Lady Bulldogs, Kyra claimed the championship,  Mackenzie Mueller earned  a fifth-place finish, and Andrea Luna Sanchez and Aza Scavariel each brought home  seventh place.

 “Kyra beat a girl she lost to earlier this year, and  that will be helpful later this year, when she is looking for a high seed at the state tournament,” Schmeichel stated.
