Chargers Jolt the Dawgs – JV Dogs Strike Back

The Bulldogs varsity basketball team ran into a buzzsaw when Hamlin took the court in Milbank on Tuesday, February 4. Hamlin, who boasts a 13-2 record and ranks No. 3 in Class A according to the SDHSAA and second according to the SD Media Prep polls, zapped the Dawgs 66-32. Bryan Meyer led Milbank’s offense with 10 points. Ryan Keeton scored seven. Emmett Hanson put up six. Graham Lightfield made five. Jack Howard and Jeter Scoular each made a bucket.

Lightfield led the Bulldogs with six boards. Sam Rick and Hanson each got four. Howard grabbed three. Ethan Owen and Layten Osowski got two apiece. Meyer, Keeton, Braylen Bowsher, Lincoln Holscher, and Charlie Peery each snagged one rebound.. Howard made two assists. Rick, Meyer, and Holscher each recorded one assist. Hanson made a block. Rick nicked a steal.

Milbank made 25.5 percent of their shots from the floor, including 18 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc. Keeton, Lightfield, and Meyer each nailed a three-pointer. Shooting without pressure, the Bulldogs claimed 83 percent from the free throw line.

The Chargers finished with three players in double figures. Zac VanMeeteren scored 20. Easton Neuendorf put up 16, and Jackson Wadsworth made 13. VanMeeteren and Dawson Noem led the defense with eight boards apiece.

The Chargers made 50 percent of their shots overall and 36 percent from long range. They matched Milbank’s 83 percent from the charity stripe.

What’s next? The varsity and C Bulldogs hope to bounce back this Friday night when they face Aberdeen Roncalli (6-8) at the Milbank Armory. The C, JV, and Varsity teams are scheduled to play.

Milbank 49 vs. Hamlin 26
Harley Zemlicka scored in double figures to push the JV Bulldogs past Hamlin 49-26 on Tuesday, February 4, in Milbank. Zemlicka posted 11 points. He also led in rebounds with six. Ryan Keeton and Jeter Scoular each put up eight points. Keeton added four rebounds and Scoular made three. Ethan Owen scored five points and pulled down five rebounds. Lincoln Holscher made five points and came away with four rebounds. Esteban Abrego had three points and one board. Jaxson Wiese dropped in three points and made an assist. Liam Street and Layten Osowski each made a basket. Osowski secured three rebounds as did Emmett Snaza. Osowskli also tacked on an assist and a steal.
Jack Stormo was the leading scorer for the Chargers. He recorded 11 points. Owen Taschner made five. Trig Heinrich had seven boards, and Aiden Abraham made five.
The Bulldogs hit 47 percent of their shots overall, including 47 percent from behind the arc. They hit four of 11 free throws – all in the second half –for 36 percent. Hamlin hit 25 percent overall and just 11. 5 percent of their 3-point shots. The Chargers downed one of four from the foul line.

C Team
Milbank 25 vs. Hamlin 32
In the game that pitted the C-team Bulldogs against the Chargers of Hamlin, Milbank started strong, but languished as the game neared the final buzzer. The score was tied 23-23 at the end of three. However, the Bulldogs were only able to put up two points in the fourth. Hamlin scored nine to hang on for the win.
Emmett Snaza made 10 points for Milbank and grabbed three rebounds. Jaxson Wiese made six points. Bennett Hunt scored three points. Max Scoular, Mack Koplin, and Lance Engebretson each made two.. Aiden Kelly led with six rebounds. Liam Street and Snaza each had three. Scoular, Hunt, and Koplin got two apiece. Wiese snapped up one. Kelly led in assists with two and Scoular led in steals with three.
