Illness and bracket changes could not stop Milbank’s speech and debate team from bringing home the third-place A Sweepstakes trophy from the Rushmore Challenge... Schuelke and Steffen Take Second at Rushmore Challenge

Illness and bracket changes could not stop Milbank’s speech and debate team from bringing home the third-place A Sweepstakes trophy from the Rushmore Challenge Friday and Saturday, February 14-15, at Harrisburg High School. It was the final regular tournament on Milbank’s schedule this season.

In his last regular tournament as a Bulldog, senior Bulldog Max Schuelke placed second in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.  He was edged out by a Sioux Falls Jefferson debater in a 1-2 ballot in the final round. Schuelke, however, won the first-place Speaker Points Award. He finished with a score of 149.5 out of 150 total points.

Keira Steffen placed second in Congressional Debate from amongst a field of 12 congresspersons. Tate Pew made the jump from novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate to the varsity division. He finished the tournament with a 1-4 record. Bri Hicks acquired a 2-3 record in Lincoln-Douglas.

Miriam Del Angel Chavez and her temporary partner, Keira Steffen, moved to the JV level of Public Forum Debate. The duo posted a 2-3 record. Each earned perfect speaker points during one of the rounds.

The Extemporaneous Speaking  portion of the National Qualifying Tournament was also held on Friday. Schuelke, Steffen, and Charlotte Street competed. Schuelke placed fifth in his division, but did not qualify.

Carlos Olivares Zuniga, Izabella Glomstad, and Ruth Luis Gomez (Most Improved) competed in Original Oratory. Trixie Coalter participated in Point of Information (POI) and Drama. Bri Hicks competed in Informative Speaking. Miriam Del Angel Chavez competed in U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking.

What’s next? The National Qualifier Tournament will be held  February 20-22. The State Tournament is set for March 7-8 at Brookings High School.
