Bulldogs Defeat Bearcats – Move on to Semifinals

Milbank plowed over Webster, 54-20, in their Region 1A basketball quarterfinal game in Aberdeen on Tuesday, March 4. The victory paved the way for the Bulldogs to the Region 1A semifinals set for this Friday, March 7. Milbank (11-11) will face Aberdeen Roncalli (10-11). Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Roncalli High School. Groton, who received the bye, will play Britton-Hecla on Friday night.

Despite the wintry weather that caused several areas of the state to postpone their region games, the Bulldogs poured on the heat to torch Webster. Sam Rick pounded in 21 points and added an assist, two rebounds, a block, and a steal. Graham Lightfield put up 11 points, two assists, and four rebounds. He also had a block, and a steal. 

Four Bulldogs finished with four points – Bryan Meyer, Emmett Hanson, Ryan Keeton, and Lincoln Holscher. Jack Howard, Ethan Owen, and Esteban Abrego each dropped in a bucket. Howard also contributed two assists and two steals.  Meyer and Owen each had one assist. Owen got a steal. Abrego made four rebounds and a steal. Hanson, Keeton, and Holscher each hauled in three rebounds. Hanson also chipped in a block. Scoular and Holscher pulled off a steal apiece. Harley Zemlicka grabbed two rebounds.

The Bulldogs downed 12 of 22 shots from the floor in the first half and 10 of 18 in the second half for 55 percent overall. They made five of 19 from long range for 26 percent and five of eight from the line for 62.5 percent.

Thomas Kuecker led Webster’s scoring with seven points. Ian Lesnar followed with four points. Tate Mammenga, Seth Lesnar, McKoy Pereboom, and Gage Wik each scored two points. Blaize Amdahl made a free throw. The Bearcats hit eight of 39 from the floor for just over 20 percent. They collected just one three-pointer from 15 attempts, but knocked down three of six from the stripe.
