MHS senior Jericho Jones placed first in the Ceramics division of the regional Art Wars competition at Northern State University on Friday, February 21. Jericho will now compete at State. Sophomore Alexa Adolf received an honorable mention in Ceramics. Senior Jessel Stengel also received an honorable mention in the Drawing division.
The students were offered a choice of Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Digital Art, or Photography and given two hours to create a piece and write an artist’s statement explaining their work. Pieces were then judged with 100 points possible. The top three in each division earned a ticket to State.

Jericho chose to work with clay. “Our prompt was about going on an adventure, so my thought process was to make something based on my bucket list,” Jericho explained. “I made a coral reef scene because one day I want to go snorkeling and I love the beach!” The photo shows the unfinished piece she created.

This is the first year MHS has entered the regional competition. Ashley Plummer serves as the students’ art instructor.
What’s next? The State Art Wars and State Student Gallery contests will be held at the Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center on April 12. The gallery will be open to the public. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m.
