Grant County held a groundbreaking ceremony today, April 22, to mark the formal start of construction on the new $7.35 million county jail. Officials in attendance included the Grant County Sheriff, Grant County Commissioners, Administrator and Assistant to the Commissioners, Jail Committee members, Grant County States Attorney, and representatives from G.A. Johnson Construction.
The jail will be erected behind the Grant County Courthouse at the northeast corner of the park on Detention Street in Milbank. The proposed 10,000 square-foot facility will be a single-story building on a concrete slab. The footprint will include the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, jail, and jail support. Features are expected to include: 20-bed jail pods, day rooms, administrative offices, and training areas. A recreation yard with a retractable roof, a kitchen, a laundry, and a secure and controlled entrance for the transfer of inmates, also known as a sallyport, are also planned.
Construction is estimated to take 14 to 16 months. G.A. Johnson Construction of Harrisburg is in charge of the project.
