The annual 4th of July Fishing Derby at Lake Farley in Milbank was a fintastic success again this year. Wendy Hentges, who sponsors the event along with her husband Rick, said, “We had 72 children participate. The weather cooperated with a sunny and warm, but windy day. Fun was had by all!”
“Lots of fish and a variety were caught,” Hentges commented, “including a northern, silver bass, bluegills, suckers, bullheads, a few walleyes, and some catfish.” Participants were all ages up to age 14. The youngest child to catch a fish was 18-month-old Haley Robinson.

Char Hoffman caught the most fish of any of the participants. She bagged 11. Quinn Thompson came in second by landing seven fish.

The largest fish caught was a 1.08 pound northern reeled in by Caleb Wheeler. Sadie Boe had the next largest whopper with a .81 pound sucker.
The Hentges thanked those who helped make the derby possible: The Sons of the American Legion supplied every child with a fishing pole to use and keep. Runnings donated the nightcrawlers. David Schell provided the prizes of tackle boxes filled with tackle. Duane Tillman volunteered to serve as the EMT during the event.
