Milbank FFA chapter members Declan Peschong, Isaak Weston, McKenzie Moe, Oliver Erickson, and Taneashea Vogel each received their iconic, blue jacket from the South Dakota FFA Foundation. Peschong was sponsored by The First National Bank in Sioux Falls. Weston was sponsored by BankWest. Moe was sponsored by Gretcehn Sharp, and Vogel by East River Cooperative.
The blue FFA jacket is a reminder of personal accomplishments and a symbol of commitment and dedication for all who wear the corduroy. The jacket has been the status symbol of the national FFA since 1933, when delegates to the national convention voted to make the jacket part of the organization’s official attire, thus creating the long-standing tradition.
When a student joins FFA, they typically purchase or borrow a jacket to compete in career and leadership development events. The jacket is their team uniform to be worn at all official FFA events.
Members are also invited to fill out the Blue Jackets Bright Futures FFA Jacket Program application. The application involves answering short essay questions about their FFA experience and goals. This gives the student an opportunity to compete to earn their jacket from sponsors who support the South Dakota FFA Foundation in welcoming members into the fabric of FFA. This fall, 456 FFA members from 89 chapters across South Dakota received their jacket from a generous benefactor.
“Putting on the blue corduroy jacket with my school’s name on the back and my name on the front is about far more than following a dress code; it’s about carrying on a legacy…that jacket represents the responsibility of a new generation to shape the future,” stated Crystal Westall, an FFA member from Harrisburg.
Are you a business or individual Interested in sponsoring an FFA jacket for a South Dakota FFA member? Sponsorships are $90 per jacket/student. Contact Gerri Ann Eide, South Dakota FFA Foundation Executive Director at 605.765.4865 or at gerri@sdffafoundation.org.
