The second Groceries for Vets event on October 7 in Milbank was declared a resounding success. Organizer Bob Frink said, “The handout was amazing.” The event was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., but Frink said, “We had 30 to 40 vets in line at 7:45 a.m., so we opened the doors and each got a box of groceries. Each box weighed about 20 pounds. Veterans from the sponsoring groups assisted the vets in getting the box out to their car.  After the initial surge, we had a steady flow of vets coming in.”

A total of 75 boxes of groceries went home with a veteran that day. The program is simple. To receive groceries, plus a one-pound block of cheese from Valley Queen, the veteran must only show a VA or military ID, their drivers license with “Veteran” listed on it, or a DD214. Widows can show their spouse’s DD214.

“We were able to do this with generous donations from the five veteran groups in Milbank and local businesses,” Frink noted.  An increase in local donations will now allow the group to hold the grocery giveaway multiple times during the year.
