Winter Storm Causes Widespread Whetstone Valley Electric Outages
Local News November 26, 2025 Staff 0

A snow and ice storm combined with wind gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour led to multiple power outages across the northern portion of Whetstone Valley Electric’s (WVE) service territory on Tuesday, November 25. The affected area stretched from Wilmot to Sisseton, with as many as 270 members without power at the peak of the event.
The storm created significant ice buildup on power lines and trees. WVE General Manager Dave Page explained, “When ice accumulates on power lines, strong winds can cause the lines to gallop – a whipping or bouncing motion that may bring wires into contact with one another or cause them to break. These conditions can result in both momentary interruptions and extended outages. Ice-laden trees, pushed by high winds, also pose a risk by making contact with energized lines and contributing to additional service interruptions.”
Outages began occurring around 1 p.m.and Page said, “Line technicians and electricians worked throughout the afternoon and evening, repairing damaged lines, replacing blown fuses, and reclosing breakers to restore service safely and efficiently.” Crews faced extremely difficult working and driving conditions, including blowing snow and near-zero visibility at times. Page noted that power was restored to all affected members by approximately 8 p.m.
On behalf of WVE, Page thanked members for their patience and crews for their dedicated efforts during such challenging conditions.
