The speech and debate coaches in the northern part of South Dakota have been collaborating to test a different approach to the debate season. A new emphasis was placed on the beginning students –also called novice – during the month of November. “Students new to debate attended afterschool and online tournaments with their peers from Aberdeen, Watertown and Brookings,” explained Miriah Hicks, head coach for MIlbank.
Milbank officially kicked off their debate competition season on December 6 at the Charger Challenge – a debate-only tournament hosted by Sioux Falls Christian. Hicks noted that the Bulldogs’ roster was missing several team members who were participating in the state Oral Interp tournament or Honors Band. Winter weather also prompted an improvised schedule to allow earlier departures for visiting schools.
The novice Public Forum team composed of Isabella Hicks and Kinley VanHoorn missed the stage by just two speaker points. The duo compiled a 3-1 record to place fourth. Miriam Chavez and Dana Chan claimed fifth place with their 2-2 record. Debrianna Hicks, the only Lincoln Douglas varsity debater for Milbank, finished at 2-2.
