Macyn Dunnihoo Breaks Longstanding MHS Record in Gymnastics

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Sisseton for a triangular that included Britton-Hecla on Saturday, January 3. In a tight meet, the three teams all finished within .55 points of each other. In the Floor Exercise, Macyn Dunnihoo took first place and broke the MHS school record by scoring 9.6. She eclipsed the previous record of 9.55 held by Lady Bulldog alumna Courtney Trapp. Trapp graduated from MHS in 2013.
Sisseton took first place as a team by scoring 134.15 points. Britton-Hecla was second at 133.95 points. Milbank, at just .35 of a point behind, took third place. They accrued 133.6 points. Kelly Wollschlager, head coach for MIlbank, noted that the Lady Bulldogs as a team increased their score by over 3.5 points from their highest score earlier this season.
In the Vault competition, Macyn led Milbank with an 8.95 to take second place.
Raina Untalan received her first of three state-qualifying scores and a personal best 8.75. She tied for third place at the meet. Nuria Rodriguez Duron earned 8.4 –also a personal best – and tied for ninth place. Aria Prasnicki scored 8.3 to take 14th place. Jada Leigh Wellnitz landed in 16th place at 8.25. Marley Pinkert and Tenley Bohn both collected personal best scores of 8.2 to also tie for 17th place.
“The team tried a lot of new skills on the Bars to increase starting value to their routines,” Wollschlager said. “Macyn added in her switch kip and moved her clear hip to the high bar helping add in the direction change and with less deductions to score a personal best of 8.2.” She secured third place. “Jada Leigh added her clear hip back in and also added a switch kip,” stated Wollschlageer. She scored 7.55 to capture fifth place. Aria scored 7.5 to tie for sixth place. “Nuria added in a drop kip and a switch kip to gain superior release and direction change credit,” Wollschlager also noted.Nuria scored 7.15 for 13th place. “Marley and Tenley both attempted two long-hang kips to fly away,” Wollsclager said. Marley scored 7.05 for 14th place. Tenley scored 6.55 for 16th place. Timbree scored 6.85 to take 15th place.
“Gaining confidence on the Beam helped the team perform a team-high beam score of 33.2 this season,” Wollschlager commented. Macyn scored 8.55 for fifth place. Jada Leigh performed a personal best routine at 8.3 for eighth place. Raina scored 8.25 for ninth place, Aria scored 8.2 for 10th place. Timbree, coming back from an ankle injury, competed on the beam for the first time this season. She scored 8.0 to collect 13th place. Nuria added in a new tumbling connection that included a front walkover. She scored 7.6 for 16th place. Marley scored 7.5 for 17th place.
Finishing on the Floor, Macyn, as mentioned, scored 9.6 to break the MHS school record of 9.55 and take first place at the meet. Raina tied for third at 8.8. Nuria right behind her at 8.75 tied for sixth place. Jada Leigh scored 8.35 to tie with teammates Aria and Marley for 13th place. Tenley recorded 7.65 for 19th place.
In the All-Around competition, Macyn scored 35.3 to bring home first place for MIlbank. Jada Leigh scored 32.45 to tie for seventh place. Aria accrued 32.35 points for ninth place. Nuria collected 31.9 points for 11th place. Marley had 31.1 to take 12th place.
Along with head coach Wollschlager, the Lady Bulldogs coaching staff this season also includes assistant coaches Michele Benike, Miranda Dunnhoo, and Amber Fraasch.
What’s next? The varsity Lady Bulldogs go to Brookings this Saturday, January 10. The varsity and junior varsity teams head to Hendricks, Minnesota, on Monday, January 12.
