The Bulldogs went up the hill to Waubay-Summit on a wintry night on Tuesday, January 20. The Lady Bulldogs and the JV boys each notched a win. The Milbank varsity girls at 57-42 and the JV boys at 34-20. The varsity boys took it down-to-the-wire, but lost by just one basket at 40-38. 

“Our guys battled in a tough, low-scoring, stop-and-start type of game with a lot of fouls called, “commented Logan Diede, Milbank’s head coach. “At the end of the day, we gave ourselves a chance amidst a night where we would’ve liked to shoot better percentages, but we came up one play short.”

The first quarter featured a little bit of muscle flexing on the court. Seeing action for MIlbank: Emmett Snaza at 6’ 6”, Lincoln Holscher at 6’ 4”,  Harley Zemlicka and Layten Osowski at 6’ 3”.Ryan  Keeton and Jack Howard at 6’ 1”, Sam Rick at 6’ and Jeter Scoular at 5’11”.  Waubay-Summit sent in Hogan Hlavacek at 6’ 7”,  Evan Aker and Newton Campbell each at 6’ 3”, Tripp Gaikowski at 6’ ,and Jace Wohleber and Lincoln Kongi each at 5’ 10”.

The Mustangs struck first with a triple and Milbank’s Scoular replied with a field goal to start the first quarter at 3-2. Several fouls netted one point from Hlavacek for the Mustangs, and  Bulldog Keeton knocked in two free throws to tie things up 4-4. Hlavacek was sent to the line again when he was fouled after a basket. He hit the plus- one to cobble together three points the old-fashioned way. Waubay-Summit went ahead 7-4. Milbank’s Rick then hit a free throw to put the score at 7-5. Hlavacek was fouled by Osowski and stepped to the line again. He collected two more points. The score was just 9-5, but both teams had each already piled up five team fouls.

Next, Mustang Kongi found himself at the stripe, but he came away empty handed. Wohleber hit a two for the Mustangs to get the score to 11-5. Hlavacek traveled, and Milbank missed a basket deep in the shot clock. Waubay Summit whiffed a long three and Scoular sent up a hail Mary as the first quarter ended.The score sat at 11-5 in favor of the Mustangs.

In the second quarter, Milbank made a bucket, and Rick hit two from the free throw line to edge Milbank within two points at 11-9. Rick then hit a triple to take the Bulldogs ahead 12-11. Mark Amdahl, veteran coach of Waubay-Summit, decided to talk about that. After the timeout, Waubay-Summit committed their fifth turnover, but Milbank lost control of the ball and couldn’t capitalize on it.  Waubay-Summit made two attempts for a  three. None of them went in. Holscher also took aim for a three from the baseline, but it was no good. Howard’s attempt was also unrewarded. Hlavacek made a shot in the dark for a three from the corner. He missed. Aker also gave it a go and failed, but Aker ended up at the line to get two. The Mustangs recovered the lead at 13-12. 

Hvalacek dropped in a basket. Scoular then got the ball to Holscher, who put it up and in for two.  Milbank trailed by just one at 15-14. Aker nailed a triple, but Gaikowski was clipped for an offensive foul and the basket didn’t count. Rick went down on the floor courtesy of the Mustangs –their fifth foul– so Rick earned a trip to the line. He departed with a souvenir point to tie the score at 15-15.

Aker and Gaikowski each acquired their third foul of the night. Campbell walked with the ball. Rick landed a two and drew the foul. He sank the free throw to push  Millbank ahead 18-15.

Wohleber missed a three. Milbank traveled. The Mustangs blew a pass right over Hlavacek  and out of bounds. Scoular then got the ball to Rick, who hurried to get a shot off, but it bounced off the rim to end the first half at just 18-15.

The third quarter started with both teams still shooting as cold as a brass toilet seat  in the Yukon. Rick finally got things going with a field goal that hit  the rim, went in, then out, then back in for two. Milbank was up 20-15 until Wohleber slid in a field goal to make it 20-17. Each team took a shot but neither hit the mark. The Mustangs  got a steal, but they missed their shot. Aker got the rebound and landed a bucket to move the score to 20-19, still  in favor of Milbank. Gaikowski dropped in another two to retake the lead for Waubay-Summit at 21-20. Holscher committed his first foul of the game to send Hlavacek to the line. Hvalacek made the front half of two. Scoular scored two to knot things again at 22-22. The Mustangs then made two in a row. The Bulldogs missed a three and Wohleber knocked in a three to push the Mustang’s lead to 29-22. Keeton hit a big three for Milbank and although the officials chatted for a while at the scorer’s table, the score remained at 29-25. Milbank was trailing by four at the end of the third.

Early in the fourth quarter, Keeton hit a two to get the Bulldogs to 29-27. Wolleber was fouled by Snaza and made one free throw. Scoular hit a bucket that got Milbank to 30-29. Wohleber answered with a three for a score of 33-29. Snaza got two to get it to 33-31 at 5:47. Gaikowski was nicked for his fourth foul of the game. Hlavacek also got caught with  a foul –his first of the game. Milbank missed their two free throws and  the score stayed at 33-31 with the Bulldogs behind by two. 

Both teams attempted unsuccessful maneuvers and shots. Wohleber was then fouled going in for another basket. He hit his first charity shot. The second was a brick, but it went in anyway, and he collected both, including his 18th point of the game. The score sat at 35-31.  Milbank had the ball. Two attempts for three were no good, but after the Mustangs got the rebound, Scoular stole it back, and he got it to Snaza for two points for the Dawgs. Milbank was threatening again at 35-33 with just over two minutes to play. The Mustangs then added a bucket to move the score at 37-33. Hlavacek hit another two-points to extend Waubay-Summit’s lead to 39-33, but Scoular launched a long two to get the Bulldogs to 39-35 at 50 seconds on the clock. Holscher fouled to send McKoy Pereboom to the line. He got one to push things to 40-35. Scoular, as cool as the other side of the pillow, landed a nice three to edge the Bulldogs to within two at 40-38. Hlavacek headed  back to the line. Neither free throw went in. With 17 seconds to go, Holscher grabbed the rebound, but things went south fast, and the Bulldogs turned over the ball. Scoular fouled out with11 points, sending Hlavacek to the stripe. Hlavacek missed both. Snaza got the rebound for Milbank, but the Bulldogs’ final shot did not go in.The game ended at 40-38. 

“We will continue working, and we will absolutely continue to get better,” stated Coach Diede. “I know there are many bright moments ahead for our group this season.”

Rick led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Scoular collected 11 points.  Keeton made seven. Holscher and Snaza each put in four. Scoular and Holscher led with six boards apiece. Howard, Rick, and Snaza each grabbed three. Keeton and Osowski hauled down two apiece. Bowsher made one. Rick, Scoular, and Keeton each added one assist. Scoular pulled off two steals, and Keeton and Snaza each got one. Snaza also added one block.

The Bulldogs made 29 percent of their shots from the floor.They went 14 percent from long range. They also downed seven of 22 from the line for 58 percent. After a streak of three wins, Milbank took the loss. 

Wohleber put up a game-high 18 points and four rebounds. Hlavacek recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Aker scored six points and got five rebounds. Tripp Gaikowski made two points and two rebounds.Teegan Gaikowski made an assist and three rebounds. Pereboom contributed one point, one assist, and one rebound. Kongi added two rebounds.

Waubay- Summit hit one-of three shots from the floor. They made 12.5 percent from beyond the arc. They made 12 of 24 from the charity stripe. The Mustangs also broke the spell on their four-game losing streak.

Milbank 34 vs. Waubay-Summit 20
Harley Zemlicka posted nine points and five rebounds to spark the JV Bulldogs to a 34-20 win over Waubay-Summit on Tuesday, January 20. Zemlicka also added two assists, a block, and two steals. Sam Wilson made six points, four rebounds, and two steals. Jaxson Wiese made five points, two assists, and two rebounds. Liam Street scored four points and four rebounds. He also snagged two steals. Max Scoular and Cade Grabow each put up three points. Scoular added one rebound, two assists, and two steals. Grabow added one rebound. Emmett Snaza contributed two points, one assist, two rebounds, and two steals. Mack Koplin also scored two points. Kye Scoular made a steal.

The JV Dawgs hit  42 percent of their shots from the floor. They downed nearly 39 percent from long range. Milbank made three-of four or 75 percent of their shots from the free throw line –all in the first half. 

McKoy Pereboom led the Mustangs with five points, three rebounds, and three steals. Cash Gaikowski added four points and three rebounds. Waubay-Summit hit 25 percent of their shots from the floor. They made one of nine from beyond the arc and five of eight or 62.5 percent from the line.

Girls Varsity Game
Milbank 57 vs. Waubay-Summit  42
With their win against Waubay-Summit on January 20, the Lady Bulldogs are on a five-game roll. Anna Neugebauer put up a double-double with 14 points and 14  rebounds to help make it happen. She added one assist, one steal , and one block. Avery Schuneman scored a game-high 17 points and added six assists and two rebounds. Susie Schuneman contributed nine points and four rebounds. She also had three assists and a block. Belle Pauli and Bree Townsend each recorded seven points. B. Pauli had eight rebounds and Townsend secured seven.They each made one steal. Adison Pauli added three points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Lydia Gall made an assist and a rebound.

Milbank hit 47 percent of their shots from the floor. They completed 30 percent from behind the arc. The Lady Bulldogs downed six of nine from the line for nearly 67 percent.

Addison Heinje led the Lady Mustangs with 15 points and five rebounds. Kayce Berger made 11 points and two steals. Cailey Boik chipped in seven points, one assist, three rebounds, and a steal.

Waubay-Summit made 30 percent of their shots overall. They landed 27 percent from long range. The Lady Mustangs went nine of 18 from the line.
