
Three Milbank area violinists performed with the Middle School All-State Orchestra at Rapid City Central High School on Saturday, February 21. The event was hosted by the South Dakota Music Educators Association. The 89-member orchestra was selected from 220 video auditions submitted from 28 schools across the state.
Kelsey Wipf, an eighth grader, was selected as principal second violin. Kelsey was also one of seven students recognized as a three-year member of the orchestra. Seventh -grader Maggie Jay was chosen as second chair in the first violin section. Annette Tschetter, also a seventh- grader, was tapped to be ninth chair in the second violin section. Maggie is the daughter of Anthony and Allison Jay. Kelsey is the daughter of Derek and Serena Wipf. Annette’s parents are Ryan and Elaine Tschetter.
The violinists are students of Elizabeth Schulte, formerly of Milbank, who now serves as the orchestra director at Mickelson Middle School in Brookings. This year’s All-State conductor was Kate Mathews. Mathews is the founder and director of the Black Hills Youth Orchestra.
