The Flame of Hope made its way from Milbank High School to Milbank Elementary this morning, Tuesday, May 12. The torch was carried by a team of local law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes during the Milbank leg of the 2026 South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The relay, happening in 34 communities, is moving the flame on its journey to the state summer games.
Students from MHS, Milbank Middle School, and Milbank Elementary lined the streets to cheer on the group. “It gives you that heartwarming feeling that you know you were out there to support these athletes,” Officer Jake Folk of the Milbank Police Department said earlier.
The torch will continue on its route across South Dakota and finish in time for the start of the South Dakota Special Olympics Summer Games to be held at Black Hills State University in Spearfish from May 14-16.
