Susan Fox, 79, of Watertown, SD, and formerly of Stockholm, SD, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at The Village of Harmony Hill in Watertown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank, SD. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank and will close with a prayer service and Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday. Fr. Tom Hartman will celebrate the Mass, and interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Stockholm, SD at 2:00 p.m.
Susan Eileen (McCabe) Fox was born in Storm Lake, IA, to John T. and Maxine E. (Erichson) McCabe, the second of nine children, on September 26, 1946. She grew up on a rented farm north of Storm Lake, IA. While growing up, she was put in charge of her younger brothers and sisters to form a crew to pull weeds out of farm fields. She learned valuable leadership lessons by doing this task. Susan attended public school and graduated in 1964 in Albert City, IA. She then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, where she earned her teaching degree in English and Music. After that, she taught High School English and Music for four years.
Susan then joined the Air Force, graduated from Officers’ Training School, was commissioned, and served her first tour at Bergstrom Air Force Base, TX, as a Personnel Officer. She was then transferred to Kelly Air Force Base, TX, to Headquarters Security Service in San Antonio, TX, also as a Personnel Officer. During these years, she earned her master’s degree in business from Webster College. Susan was promoted regularly and was a Captain while at Kelly AFB. She met Captain John L. Fox while at Kelly, and they married on November 17, 1979. John had two young sons (Eric and Jarett) from a previous marriage; John and Susan raised the boys to adulthood as they continued their careers in the Air Force.
They moved in succession to Altus AFB, OK, Ramstein Air Base, West Germany, and then to Pentagon, North Virginia. From there, they went to Osan Air Base, South Korea. Son Eric, graduated from Seoul American High School in 1992. John and Susan returned to the United States at Scott AFB, IL, where Jarett graduated from high school in 1994. They then decided to retire. Susan retired in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
John and Susan bought a farm near Stockholm, SD, where they have resided since. Susan joined the St. Lawrence Catholic Church shortly after arriving in South Dakota and attended regularly. She also joined the American Legion and its Auxiliary (Post 171), where she maintained membership for more than 30 years.
Susan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013, and John became her caregiver. Susan entered assisted living at the Village in Watertown, SD, in May, 2025. She died there on June 12, 2026, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. She was 79 years old.
She is survived by her husband, John; two sons: Eric (Kristin) Fox; and Jarett (Sheila) Fox; and five grandchildren: Aiden, Jude, William, Corey, and Hannah Fox. May she rest in peace.
