Alex Thompson

Alexander “Alex” Richard Thompson, 85, of Stockholm, SD, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026, at his residence in Stockholm.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Elim Evangelical Mission Church, Stockholm, SD, at 2:00 PM. Paster Colleen Natalie will officiate.

Alexander Richard Thompson was born on January 22, 1941, at St. Bernard’s Hospital in Milbank, SD, to John and Theodora (Carlsen) Thompson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Elim Mission Church in Stockholm. He attended Madison #3 Rural Grade School and graduated from Strandburg High School in 1959.

Alexander was united in marriage to Jane Orman on December 15, 1962, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. They were blessed with 63 years of marriage and three children: Alexander II, Julie, and Christopher.

He joined the U.S. Air Force for four years in late 1959 and served in Japan, Korea, and Wichita, Kansas. He then worked for Control Data Corporation in Minnesota, Bendix Radio Corporation at NASA Space Flight Center in Houston, Texas, NASA Tracking Stations in Tananarive, Madagascar, and Quito, Ecuador, and REMACS Computer Systems in Louisiana.

In 1981, he started his own company, Computer Business Systems, developing business software until 2003, when he moved to South Dakota and opened Alice’s Restaurant in Stockholm in 2007.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Jane of Stockholm, SD; his children: Alexander II Thompson of Stockholm, SD; Julie Brennan of St. Paul, MN; and Christopher (April) Thompson of Watertown, SD; four grandchildren: Corey (Thalia), Tobius, Miickel, and Dmitrix; and five great-grandchildren: Mateo, Nico, Tomas, Lucus, and Mia; siblings: Betty (Tom) Campbell, Catherine (Dennis) Martenson, Charles (Christy) Thompson, James (Peggy) Thompson, Dorothy Diaz-Thompson, and David (Nadine) Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Theodora Thompson; his parents-in-law, Edmund and Loretta Orman; brothers John Thompson and Allen Thompson; sister Patty Fredlund; niece Theresa Schmig; brothers-in-law Bill Diaz and Wilfred Fredlund; and great-nephew Cooper O’Bray.
