Milbank HOSA (Future Health Professionals) co-sponsored Science Saturday with Milbank Hospital-Avera on Saturday, October 17. The event at the hospital drew 66 children in second through sixth grade. HOSA members and employees of the hospital helped the students to navigate through five hands-on activities related to health science. The kids also each received a goodie bag filled with treats and health care-related items to take home.

Activities
All About Blood Using Slime – The children learned about red and white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. They saw how blood separates in a tube and explored how to use a vein finder.
Stop the Bleed – The children viewed a cow liver, learned how to stop bleeding, and why that is so important.
Yoga – The children performed simple stretches and yoga postures used to develop flexibility and strength and promote mindfulness.

Building Cells Using Candy – The children learned how the different parts of cells work together to form organs.
Pulmonary Pumpkins – Using a real cow lung and a pumpkin, the children examined lung tissue and discovered how lungs are designed to expand and contract.
