St. Lawrence School Student Council Donates To Food Pantry

The St. Lawrence School Student Council purchased and donated Thanksgiving food staples to a family for the upcoming holiday. The 16 students used the proceeds from their school store. Half of the group went shopping at Hartman’s Family Foods and purchased the food and the other eight students delivered the food to Heather Rise at the Grant County Food Pantry.

Items included in the meal are: a turkey breast, corn, potatoes, rolls, apple and pumpkin pie, apple juice, and napkins and plates. “They even thought of those extra items such as butter and Cool Whip,” said student council advisor, Susie Wendland.

The St. Lawrence School student council has been revived by parents of students and is run by volunteers. “The theme for the year is Armor of God,” Wendland explained. “These kids, along with the support of the entire school, have done many things already this year.” She went on to mention the group adopted two armadillos at the Watertown Zoo and are planning a teacher and staff appreciation later this week. The group also has plans to do a toilet paper drive and will wrap up the semester with a talent show.

Students sell items to other students and staff in their school store. Items typically for sale include: scented pencils and crayons, St. Lawrence logo winter hats, baseball caps and headbands, various snack items, stickers, book marks, and fresh baked goods. The proceeds from the store are used to give back to the community, including the recent donation to the Food Pantry. The students are also in charge of helping out with the school’s recycling project.

Sixth grader Nathan Pillatzki is the student council president and fifth grader Jacynda Street is the vice-president. The students serve on the council for one semester, except kindergarten and first grade students who rotate each quarter.

Additional council members are: sixth grade, Nadia Schneck and Paul Van Dover; fifth grade, Landon Novy and Lilly Dries; fourth grade, Josh Pederson and Katie Kruger; third grade, Garrett Weber and Nathan Fonder; second grade, Jaxson Wiese and Liam Street; first grade, Macie Van Lith and Will Muellenbach; and kindergarten, Jemma Frerichs and Tristan Hooth. Serving the council for the first quarter were first grade students Rylan Wendland and Andrew Karels, and kindergarten students Avigail Howard and Nathan Kelly.
