Kylynn Schwandt, a fifth grader at Milbank Elementary School, won South Dakota’s 2022 Grandparent Essay Contest co-sponsored by AARP South Dakota and South Dakota School Personnel. 

The essay Kylynn composed about her grandmother, Julie Schwandt, initially took first place in the local competition sponsored by the Milbank Area Retired Teachers and Personnel Association (MARTA) and then advanced to the state level, where it also took top honors from amongst 500 essays.

Kylynn and her grandmother will be guests at the 2022 SDRSP Convention to be held in May in Oacoma near Chamberlain. The author will read her essay to the attendees during the event. Kylynn is the daughter of Jackson and Bre Schwandt.

Milbank’s second-place winner was Aria Prasnicki. She is the daughter of Derek and Damiane Prasnicki. Milbank’s third-place winner was Willow Bender. She is the daughter of Neal and Jaimee Bender.

Since 2003, AARP South Dakota and South Dakota School Personnel (formerly the South Dakota Retired Teachers Association) have co-sponsored the annual grandparent essay contest for fifth graders across the state. Their goal is to raise awareness of the more than 8,000 South Dakota children who live in households headed by a grandparent, to acknowledge the important contributions of grandparents, and highlight the nurturing relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren
