Julian Van Veen, a student at Milbank Middle School, will compete in the South Dakota Spelling Bee final at Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) in Mitchell on Saturday, March 29. Spellers from 30 schools across the state will face off for the opportunity to earn a trip to the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held May 27-29 in Washington, D.C. This year marks the 100th year of the national bee.
Usually, South Dakota holds local and regional bees to determine the state competitors. This year, they had no regional or state bee sponsor. At the 11th hour, South Dakota News Watch stepped in and DWU agreed to provide the venue and volunteers to ensure South Dakota could select their state winner.
According to Greg Cantine, a Milbank Middle School English teacher who organized Milbank’s bee, this is a departure from the past, but the silver lining is that twice as many students will get the chance to participate in the state bee this year rather than just the 15 regional winners.
