Joseph Mark Kanthak was born on March 25, 1970, in Ortonville, MN, to Joseph and Virginia (Zahnow) Kanthak. He grew up on the family farm. Joe was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and attended Grant-Deuel School, graduating with the Class of 1989.
Following his education, Joe began a career in trucking. While continuing to live on the family farm, he hauled livestock for Zomers Trucking out of Sioux Falls, SD. Joe was united in marriage to Lori Homan, and together they were blessed with a son, Lukas. The couple later parted ways.
In 2017, Joe returned home to farm alongside his parents, a chapter of life that brought him great fulfillment. In 2018, he married Michelle Gerdes. Through this marriage, Joe was blessed with two stepchildren, Tatum and Carlin, whom he welcomed into his life and family. Joe and Michelle later parted ways.
In his younger years, Joe enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors. As the years went on, he developed a passion for woodworking, a craft that became especially meaningful to him. He took pride in decorating his homes with handcrafted woodwork and creating beautiful furniture pieces for family and friends.
Upon returning home, Joe discovered a love for horses and became actively involved in riding, team penning, and rodeo activities. He even built an arena pen where he could spend time riding and enjoying the sport he came to cherish. He found joy in fishing and appreciated any opportunity to be outdoors.
Joe will be remembered for his hardworking nature, his craftsmanship, his love of farming and animals, and the care he showed to those around him. The memories he created, and the pieces of himself he left in the lives of family and friends, will be treasured for years to come.
Joe is survived by his son, Lukas Kanthak of Revillo, SD; his parents: Joseph and Virginia Kanthak of Revillo, SD; former wives: Michelle Kanthak of Milbank, SD; and Lori Homan of Marietta, MN; his step-children, Myranda, Tatum, and Carlin; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
