The U. S. Marshals, with the assistance of the Milbank Police Department, apprehended 30-year-old Steven Gutierrez Wednesday morning at an apartment complex in Milbank.

According to Police Chief Boyd VanVooren, the U. S. Marshals  arrived unannounced at his office requesting the assistance of the department. With the use of technology and a description of the suspect’s vehicle, the marshals determined he was in the area. “The Marshals use task forces to apprehend felony suspects,” explained VanVooren. “That’s their job, and we were glad to help out.”

The local department guided the Marshals in the search. Using its resources and knowledge of the area, the task force was led to the suspect’s location.  “We all worked together, and it went very smoothly,” stated VanVooren.

Gutierrez was charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault on August 5 by Ramsey County’s States Attorney. The charges stemmed from an incident which occurred July 31.  Gutierrez was suspected of slashing his pregnant girlfriend’s throat in the couple’s home in St. Paul, MN. The suspect fled after the assault. A warrant for his arrest was issued after he was charged.

Gutierrez is being held in South Dakota, but is not in Milbank. He can agree to be brought to Minnesota to face the charges. If he refuses, the Ramsey County attorney’s office will seek a warrant to  extradite him.
