floricultureThe Milbank FFA Floriculture team captured first place during the 88th Annual South Dakota State FFA Convention held in Brookings on the campus of South Dakota State University April 10-12. The team of Kimberly Aburto, Maddie Liebe, Korinne Roggenbuck, and Tera Hanson will represent South Dakota and the Milbank chapter at the National FFA Convention October 19-22 in Indianapolis. “They worked for two years to earn this first place finish,” stated FFA advisor Jerry Janisch. “I am very proud of them.” Liebe also captured the individual Floriculture title and Hanson placed fifth. The team is coached by Sandy Christensen.

Nearly 4,000 members and 81 chapters came together for the state event to celebrate achievement, inspiration, and a passion for agriculture. Speakers from different backgrounds were featured and students were offered an array of options from career development events to business education workshops.

state_degreeSix MHS seniors received the State FFA Degree -the highest FFA degree awarded in South Dakota. Recipients were: Katie Cannedy, Rebekah Tuchscherer, Brianna Schreurs, Chris Loutsch, Tera Hanson, and Kristine Fairchild.

Kadon Leddy earned first place in the AgriScience competition. “He will go on to FFA regionals in hopes of advancing to nationals,” said Janisch.
Earning second place in Food Science was the team of Sophia Seffrood, Tori Quade, Sara Capp, and Sadie Holland. Seffrood finished sixth individually and Quade placed eighth. “This is a first year team that got beat by a three-year team. We will get them next year,” Janisch said.

Milbank placed third in Natural Resources with the team of Chase Pinkert, Tanner Kettwig, Kadon Leddy, and Chris Loutsch. Pinkert also took eighth place in the individual competition.

In the Milk Quality event, Milbank finished in fourth place overall. Trevor Schmidt led the team with an eighth place finish. Other team members were Brianna Schreurs, Devon Balling, and Callie Rolin.

The Vet Science team of Nathan Loutsch, Claire Mischel, Macie Redmond, and Kristine Fairchild finished in eleventh place. Fairchild earned the top individual honor in that event.

The Dairy Cattle team finished fourteenth overall. Team members were: William Mischel, Jimmie Berkner, Kellie Christians, and Kendra Schweer.
