Four Milbank Area Retired Teacher Association (MARTA) members attended the South Dakota Retired State Personnel (SDRSP) convention in Pierre May 3-4. MARTA President Rhonda Preller was recognized with an Outstanding Volunteer Service award. She was one of just four recipients of the award. MARTA was also commended on their 14% increase in membership – one of just five units which realized substantial growth.
State Director of AARP, Erik Gaikowski, and Travis Almond from the South Dakota Retirement System addressed the attendees. Pierre optometrist, Denette Becker, also related her family’s experiences of adopting two boys from Africa.
The yearly SDRSP business meeting was held Wednesday, May 4. Community service awards were presented to individuals and state units. MARTA received the Community Service Award “With Our Youth” for its innovative ideas and hours of working with the youth in Milbank.
