The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department will start the summer with its annual open house and free fishing weekend May 20-22.
“The statewide event waives entrance fees and allows free fishing for residents and non-residents,” stated local GFP Conservation Officer, Jamie Pekelder. “All state park and recreation areas will be open without entrance fees during the three-day event. The event allows anglers to fish without a license statewide. Fishing regulations and limits as well as camping fees still apply. Parks will also be offering daily activities to celebrate the event.”
Hartford Beach State Park, near Corona and Wilmot, will host a disc golf tournament Saturday, May 21, beginning at 1 p.m. There will be two categories of competition – adults and youth under age 14. Prizes will be awarded after everyone has played one round. Participants are encouraged to come early to play a practice round prior to the start time.
Camping reservations at all South Dakota State Parks can be made 24 hours a day. Reservations can be made online at www.campsd.com or by calling 1-800-710-2267. Visit www.gfp.sd.gov for the complete listing of state parks and events For more information, please contact Pekelder at 432-6374.
