The new Milbank Area Hospital Avera Health Care Campus is on schedule for a completion date of October 2016. According to marketing director, Amy Thue, the new facility is expected to open in late October or early November.
The exterior of the building is near completion with approximately 200,000 bricks. Dakota Mahogany granite for the front facade of the building, interior columns and baseboards will begin to be installed in the coming weeks. Dakota Granite is donating the 80,000 pounds of Dakota Mahogany granite for the project. The parking lot and city road will be completed in early summer.
Inside the walls of the new facility, finishings are being installed including cabinetry, plumbing fixtures and some medical equipment through several portions of the building. At this time the project is approximately 70% complete.
“Every time I am at the site to tour the new facility, I am impressed with the progress that is being made,” stated Natalie Gauer, hospital administrator. “Our staff is in the process of solidifying moving plans to ensure that we have a smooth transition from the current clinic and hospital facilities to our new space.”
Through the efforts of the Northeast South Dakota Healthcare Foundation (NESDHCF) there has been $5 million raised during the capital campaign for the new facility. At this time the foundation will be working with the community to raise an additional $465,000 for equipment needs. They recently received a $40,000 donation from the It Only Takes A Spark Cancer Walk board so there is $425,000 left to raise to reach this goal.
“We are humbled to be a part of a community that has raised $5 million for this project,” said Jim Gesswein, foundation chair. “It shows the importance of healthcare to our community. This final effort will help us to not only have a new facility but to fill it with state-of-the-art equipment to provide the best possible service.”
