register_to_voteThe 2016 General Election is just three weeks away. Have you registered to vote? Or do you have plans to be out of town on November 8 and need to vote absentee?

Registering to vote in South Dakota is easy. Simply fill out the one-page form at the Grant County Auditor’s office in the Grant County Courthouse. “You can pick up the form here or print it off online,” stated Grant County Auditor Karen Layher. “When you bring it to the courthouse, you also need to show your driver’s license with the number.”

The deadline to register to vote is Monday, October 24, at 5 p.m. Absentee voting must be completed by Monday, November 7, at 5 p.m. According to Layher, there are 4,851 active voters in Grant County and 265 have already cast their ballot using the absentee voting process.

To register to vote in South Dakota, you must:
• Be a United States citizen.
• Reside in South Dakota.
• Be at least 18 years old on or before the next election.
• Not currently serving a sentence for a felony conviction which included imprisonment, served or suspended, in an adult penitentiary system.
• Not be judged mentally incompetent by a court of law.

The online form may be downloaded and printed at www.sdsos.gov/elections-voting/voting/register-to-vote. Once the form is completed, you can take it directly to the auditor’s office or mail to the office before the deadline.
