img_3018Milbank High School band students participated in the 70th Annual Northern State University Band Clinic in Aberdeen on November 9. The event was held at the newly renovated Johnson Fine Arts Center on the campus of NSU. Following a day of workshops and rehearsals, a grand concert was performed.

The NSU band clinic was established in 1947 and is the longest running band directors/student workshop in South Dakota. With the mission of exposing students and directors to new resources and educational techniques for school bands, the clinic features two high school festival bands and the NSU Symphonic Band in concert.

Conducting the festival bands as well as presenting clinics were: Dr. Terry Beckler, conductor and percussion clinician; Dr. Rolf Olson, conductor and director of bands; Mr. Jerry Letcher, conductor and low brass clinician; Mr. Fred Hemke, woodwind clinician; Dr. Audrey Miller, clarinet clinician; Dr. Grant Manhart, high brass clinician; and Mr. Dan Rieck, percussion clinician.

Several MHS students were recognized for four years of participation in the event. It also made them eligible for an NSU college scholarship. Those seniors were: Taylor Balling, Jamie DeVaal, Brooke Fraasch, Allison Grear, Sarah Jarman, Korinne Roggenbuck, Tatiana Stemsrud, and Sarah Ward.

MHS students who participated in the event included: freshman Alaina Rausch (clarinet), senior Taylor Balling (clarinet), freshman Tracy Pillatzki (trombone), freshman Landon Brown (French horn), junior Kimberlly Aburto (trumpet), junior Becca Loehrer (flute), and senior Brooke Fraasch (clarinet).
