The first baby of 2017 was born at Milbank Area Hospital Avera Tuesday, January 3, but it was an unexpected stop for parents, Ethan and Ashley Robish of West Fargo, North Dakota. The couple was enroute to Sioux Falls with an overnight visit planned at parents Al and Shirley Robish of Strandburg and Sheila and Kenne Dailie of Milbank. “Needless to say, we did not make it to Sioux Falls,” Ashley said.

Ashley is an obstetric nurse and had her delivery planned at the hospital where she works in Fargo. The baby was not due until January 20. When labor began, she was a bit surprised. “I thought I might have kidney stones, but it turns out it was back labor and our baby was ready to come into this world.”

The couple went to the Milbank Hospital on New Year’s Day and because of the ice storm that hit the area and questionable weather conditions, Dr. Paul Denna encouraged them to stay. He later delivered the baby.

The baby girl, Mya LaRee, was born at 10:17 a.m. on January 3. She weighed six pounds, 13 ounces and was 21 inches long. She was honored as the first baby of the new year with a gift basket.
