_dsc0020-8Boyd and Kathy Sussex submitted their resignations to the Milbank School District Board of Education during its regular meeting Monday, January 9. The resignations will be effective at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

Boyd graduated from Valley City State College in Valley City, North Dakota, and coached in North Dakota at Glenburn, Fessenden, and Garrison for 14 years before coming to Milbank in 1987. He taught social studies at MHS and was the varsity boys basketball coach. Boyd led the Bulldogs to a State Class A championship title in 2005 – only the second title in school history.

Boyd became the athletic director at MHS in 2008 and also continued his teaching duties. “I appreciate the commitment and organization required to fulfill the job as athletic director,” stated Superintendent Tim Graf. “Boyd’s passion is evident in the way he approaches his work and his organizational skills have never been questioned.”

“The memories created here and the relationships developed will stay with me forever,” Boyd said. “Even though the end is drawing near, the connection with students and staff, past and present, will never be lost. My intention in these remaining months is to follow my mantra – ‘leave it better than you found it.’”

Kathy also began her teaching career in North Dakota after graduating from Valley City State. She taught at Park River, Glenburn, Fessenden, and Garrison before coming to the Milbank School District in 1990. “I believe there is a direct correlation between our graduation rates and the work Kathy has done in the Opportunity Room,” Graf stated.

“Retirement is calling and the time is right,” Kathy said. “Working here has been such a wonderful experience and I will cherish the memories forever. I have thoroughly loved my time with my students, coworkers, and superiors and hope we will stay in touch. It will be an emotional exit as I walk out of school that last day in May.”
