The Milbank Fire Department responded to a call of an outside fire and unknown situation in the area of 149th Street and 467th Avenue, west of Milbank, on Saturday, April 2, at 2:30 a.m. Approximately 100 acres of land owned by Tracy Rosenberg and Marlin Schmidt were in flames. The Marvin and Corona Fire Departments assisted. Firefighters were on the scene until about 6:30 a.m.

The official cause has not been determined. Milbank Fire Chief Kevin Schuelke speculated the fire might have been ignited by sparks from a passing train. “Having Marvin and Corona assist with this fire was a big help,” Schuelke stated. “The darkness and rough terrain made things difficult.”
