Staffing changes for the 2017-2018 school year were approved by the Milbank School District Board of Education during its regular meeting April 10. The board approved the resignation of Sandy Tucholke, Melissa Bastien, and Cassandra Meyer.

Tucholke has been the Koch Elementary School nurse since 2005. In her resignation letter, Tucholke said she struggled with her decision, “but it is time to put down my nursing cap and be around for my children and their families.”

Melissa Bastian resigned as middle school (7th grade) volleyball coach. Bastian has coached volleyball since 2007. Cassandra Meyer resigned as a paraprofessional at Koch School. She will add a baby to her family this summer. Graf also noted Kelli Hoff will be the C team volleyball coach for the 2017 season to replace Jolene Rick who previously resigned that position.

The Milbank OST summer staff was approved by the board. Returning members will be: Karen Vaudrey, Lorrie Hardy, Jayne Paysen, Cori Redmond, Kaylee Pinkert, Lexy Pillatzki, Ashley McCulloch, Abby Wollschlager, Taylar Bock, Presley Peschong, Tatiana Stemsrud, Alec Bien, and JP Lindquist. New staff are Devon Balling and Sarah Jarman.

The district’s summer maintenance staff was also approved as recommended by Head Custodian Jerry Kathman. The maintenance staff will include Julie Dwyer, Becky Johannsen, Ethan Bohn, and Lisa Brown.

The Summer Food Service Program was approved by the board. “We expect that the program will be cost neutral or very close to break even depending upon participation,” stated Graf. The tentative schedule calls for serving lunch at Koch School from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and an afternoon snack between 2 and 3:15 p.m. “All meals and snacks for students would be free. We expect OST and the summer MAYA classes to provide a great base of students who will participate in this program.” According to Graf, as long as the number of students is sufficient, he expects the reimbursement rates to provide enough revenue to fund the program. The rates are $3.8325 for lunch and $.9075 for snacks. The price for an adult meal is $4 for the summer program.
The board also approved the implementation of an English Language Learner (ELL) summer camp. Mrs. Christine Townsend will be the director. Townsend said, “We have an unofficial registration of 21 students.

The board also passed a resolution authorizing membership in the South Dakota High School Activities Association, and declared a used wrestling mat as surplus property. They approved the Northern Plains Insurance Pool Joint Powers Agreement and payment. A payment of $86,719 was approved for partial self-funding. “The payment helps establish a reserve fund for the insurance pool and is eligible to be refunded should we leave the pool,” Graf stated.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education has been set for Monday, May 8, at 7 p.m.
