MHS senior Hannah Tietjen signed her letter of intent to swim at the collegiate level for the University of South Dakota in Vermillion next fall. Hannah is the daughter of Heather and Scott Tietjen.

“I’ve kind of always had the mindset, even while swimming here in Milbank, that I wanted to swim in college,” she said. “When college coaches began recruiting me a year ago, I took a look at several schools and knew collegiate swimming would be for me. At USD, I had a gut feeling that was the school for me. I felt the most at home there.”

Tietjen began swimming for the Milbank Area Lions Swim Team (MALST) at age five. As she continued to accumulate top times and places, she felt a year-round team would be beneficial. “We joked about going year round for a long time, but thought the drive to Watertown wouldn’t work,” Tietjen explained. She made the switch to WASC (Watertown Area Swim Club) in eighth grade and has been swimming with them ever since.

She has set a high goal for her swimming career. Tietjen stated, “My ultimate goal is to swim at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.”
