The Milbank FFA Chapter held its annual awards banquet Monday, May 8. Officers for the 2017-18 school year were chosen. Chase Pinkert was selected as president; Nathan Loutsch, vice president; Sara Capp, secretary; Claire Mitchell, treasurer; Callie Bolin, sentinel; Kimberlly Aburto, student advisor; Kendra Schweer, parliamentarian, and Kellie Christians, reporter.

Chapter awards were also given to MHS FFA members for their involvement in the organization. “FFA is a participatory organization – you get what you put in it,” said advisor Jerry Janisch. “There were many outstanding candidates for these awards, but only one could be selected.”

Trevor Schmidt received the Seize the Moment-Justin Maass Award. This award, as voted on by fellow members, is to recognize the member who had the greatest FFA involvement, dedication, and enthusiasm for FFA. The award also comes with a $150 scholarship. “There was a tight vote for this award,” stated Janisch.

Kimberlly Aburto was named the FFA Member of the Year. “We had several good candidates,” Janisch said, “but this member put her heart and soul into FFA activities.” Kimberlly assisted other members to prepare, and worked on numerous local, district, state, and national FFA activities. She is the District 1 FFA President, a member of the senior FFA officer team, the national FFA Floriculture team, and the winning South Dakota State FFA Biotechnology team.

Joe Harstad received the Star Greenhand award. The Star Greenhand award is the top honor given to a first year FFA member. “This award goes to someone who stepped out of their comfort zone and tried different events at the leadership and production level,” said Janisch. “Joe was a member of the Junior FFA officer team and Natural Resources team. He sold fruit and magazines, and also assisted the chapter.”
