Dick Schwandt will continue as the president of the Milbank School District Board of Education for the 2017-2018 school year. He was elected to the position during the regular meeting of the board on Monday, July 10. Milt Stengel will also continue as the vice president of the board. He was administered his oath of office. Other board members include Tracy Upton, Amy Thue, and Sheila Bien.

Schwandt will also continue as the ASBSD legislative contact person to serve as a liaison between the Milbank School District and the ASBSD. He has served in that capacity for the past five years.

The board approved an agreement and the creation of a teaching position for the Blue Sky Colony Attendance Center for the 2017-2018 year. “The agreement is similar to most of the colony school arrangements in the state of South Dakota,” explained Superintendent Tim Graf. The colony will run in accordance with all the state and federal laws, administrative rules and policies applicable to public schools and all rules and policies of the Milbank School District.

The board approved the hiring of Kari Schmeichel as the Blue Sky Colony teacher. “Kari was previously hired to be a paraprofessional at Koch School for the coming year, and had been teaching in Grant-Deuel prior,” said Graf. “Kari is also certified in Special Education, which is an added benefit should that need to be utilized.”

Several items were declared as surplus property. The first reading of a procurement policy and district meal charge policy was done. “These are new policies that, because of the National School Lunch Program, we are required to have in place. The policies are nothing new, but now are in written form,” said Graf.

The next regular meeting of the board is Monday, August 14, at 7 p.m. in the Central Office board room.
