The Grant County Christian Service Council teamed up with Feeding South Dakota to sponsor four food giveaways in Milbank this year. The duo provided food to 900 local families.
The most recent giveaway was Wednesday, October 18, at the Grant County 4-H grounds. Food for 230 people was available, and coordinator LeAnn Kuper reported 227 people were served. She said, “We gave all the food away.”
Sixty volunteers helped distribute the food and assisted people by carrying boxes to their vehicles. MARTA- the Milbank Area Retired Teachers Association volunteered. The confirmation students from American Lutheran Church carried pumpkins, squash, and watermelons and volunteers from Countryside Covenant Church served water to attendees waiting in line.
The year’s food is valued at $90,000, which amounts to about $100 per family. “With this great service we were able to serve those families at the low cost of $2,500 to the council,” stated Kuper.
This week’s event was the last one for this year. The giveaways resume in April 2018 with four dates scheduled for next year.
