Marty Buttke was elected chairman of the board of the Grant County Commissioners at their first meeting of the new year on Tuesday, January 2. Buttke succeeds Mike Mach who completed his one-year term. Paul Dummann was elected as vice-chairman for 2018.
“It’s been a great year,” says Mach. “I encourage everyone, not only members of this board, but the public in general, to get involved with committees, organizations, and groups – even the smallest thing. Everyone has opinions and suggestions and you can help make a difference no matter how big or small it may be.”
Other board appointments include: Buildings – Marty Buttke; Christian Service Council -Karen Layher; Insurance Alliance – Bill Street; Economic Development Corporation – Buttke; Community Transit – Buttke; 4-H – Joan Czmowski; First District – Mach; Glacial Lakes – Chamber directors; ICAP – Doug Stengel; Law Enforcement – Dummann; Library Board – Layher; Mental Health – Dummann; Planning and Zoning – Mach; Visiting Neighbor – Layher; Weed – Street; Emergency and Disaster – Street; Highway – Stengel; and Milbank Housing Authority – Buttke.
The board also approved The Grant-Roberts Ambulance Service as the county’s ambulance service, and First Bank and Trust as the official depository. The holiday schedule for 2018 was approved with the addition of a full day off on Christmas Eve, December 24. A three percent increase in wages was approved for 2018. According to Layher this is consistent with the rest of the state. Mileage and meals rates were approved, consistent with state rates. The funeral allowance remains the same as last year at $3,100 plus the cost of opening and closing the grave. Election salaries also remain the same.
Other county appointments approved include: Sheryl Ward – Emergency and Disaster Director; Krista Ateyo-Gortmaker – Planning and Zoning Director; Wanda Koepke – Visiting Neighbor Coordinator; Kathy Steinlicht – Assessor; Mark Luesink – Coroner; Kerwin Schultz – Highway Superintendent; and Scott Malimanek – Veterans Services Officer (VSO).
The next regular meeting of the commission is Tuesday, January 16, at 8 a.m. at the Grant County Courthouse
