According to Karen Layher, President of Milbank American Legion Auxiliary, Abigail Michels, Hope Osborn, Kylee Mogen, and Caitlin Kroemer have been chosen as the 2018 MHS delegates to Girls State. The 72nd Annual American Legion Auxiliary South Dakota Girls State takes place on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion from May 28 through June 2.

Girls State is a program for young women that creates a laboratory to explore and participate in government and political science. Under the sponsorship of the South Dakota Department of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1947, South Dakota Girls State has grown from 117 girls to over 400.

Delegates are assigned a hypothetical city, county, and political party. Each delegate runs for office, campaigns for herself or others, attends conventions, and votes. Delegates also have the opportunity to join the chorus, play in recreational activities, and enter the talent show. The week culminates with the inauguration of the 2018 ALA Girls State Governor.
