The Milbank Fire and Rescue Department responded to a call reporting a house fire at 14427 479th Avenue on Tuesday, May 29. The property is the residence of Corey and Heather Veen.

Upon arrival, the fire and rescue team discovered heavy smoke from a fire centrally located on the main level. Firefighters entered the building, attacked, and knocked down the fire.

According to Fire Chief Kevin Schuelke, the fire originated in the laundry or bathroom area and spread to the adjacent hallway, but was extinguished before burning additional rooms. Schuelke says, “Many personal items were saved, but the house sustained considerable fire, smoke, and water damage.”

The Big Stone Fire Department was dispatched to provide standby water supply. The Grant County Sheriffs Department, Grant County Emergency Management, and the American Red Cross also assisted.

On Friday, May 25, at 1:00 pm  the Milbank Fire and Rescue team responded to two grass fires. The first fire burned approximately 120 acres at 151 Street and 460th Avenue. The South Shore and Marvin fire squads also responded, and firefighters remained on the scene for approximately two hours. Friday evening, a fire was also put out at 14975 482nd Avenue east of Milbank near the home of Scott Flockart.
