Kathy Tyler of rural Big Stone City has announced her candidacy for District 4 House of Representatives (Grant, Deuel, and parts of Brookings and Codington counties). Tyler has resided in Grant County for 45 years and is a former legislator, teacher, small business owner, and school board member. She is also a grandmother, volunteer worker, and farmland owner. Tyler threw her hat into the ring after Melissa Meidinger of rural Watertown withdrew her candidacy.

“Entering the race at this late date is going to be a challenge. When this election cycle began, I had not planned to be a candidate,” Tyler says. “But when another candidate had to step aside for personal reasons, I felt I had to step up. This election is a very important one for our state and our country, and I want to make sure the voters of District 4 have the opportunity to hear a vigorous debate with a full slate of candidates.”

Tyler adds, “I look forward to meeting with you and hearing your thoughts on important issues like health care and government transparency. I will do my best to earn your vote this fall.”

Tyler served two years in the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2013 and 2014. During that time, she says she sponsored and supported bills that supported education, honesty and ethics in government, and other common-sense legislation. She helped lead the charge in uncovering the multi-million dollar EB-5 scandal and believes she saw the repercussions of that mission when she was defeated in the 2014 election.

Tyler says she faces an uphill battle as she fights the negative ads of past election campaigns, but is up to the challenge. She also says she is “a born and bred farm girl, who supports the family farm and ranch and a pro-life Democrat who extends the pro-life platform to include life beyond birth – adequate medical care, good education, and three meals a day for all children.” She says, “small businesses are the backbone of a community and the state needs to start appreciating what our small communities offer.”
