The process for becoming a director is contained in the cooperative’s bylaws in Article IV. The bylaws can be found on the WVEC website at www.whetstone.coop, by contacting the WVEC office at whetstone@whetstone.coop, or by calling 800-568-6631. Each candidate should carefully read the bylaws and understand the procedures.
Typical duties and responsibilities of a board member include: sending representatives to the associations of which the cooperative is a member, attending educational seminars, serving on other cooperative boards, lobbying, remaining informed on pertinent legislative issues, and reading and studying to remain informed of current issues and how they might affect the co-op. The board also reviews financial reports and work plans, financial audits, and develops long-term plans to assure the financial and operational stability of the cooperative.
Directors can expect to commit about 30 days per year for cooperative-related activities. During a director’s first full term, every effort should be made to complete the NRECA Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) Program.
