The Milbank Fire Department, Grant County Emergency Management, the Grant County Highway Department, Justin Layher, and Al’s Body Shop mounted a daring rescue during last Thursday’s spring snowstorm. A mother with two children – one three years old and one six years old- ran out of gas on the highway in a rural area.

The woman reported she was stranded somewhere north of Milbank on 472nd Avenue – also known as the Corona road. The teams assembled three snowmobiles and a snowplow. The snowmobiles searched ahead of the snowplow – one on each side and one in the middle. When that effort came up empty, the rescue teams continued to search and found the young family several miles from their reported location on Highway 12 at 470th Avenue. They were returned to safety unharmed.

Kevin Schuelke, head of Grant County Emergency Management said, “No travel means no travel! People who don’t heed the warnings are usually on their own. In this case, though, there were kids involved.”
