Kiel and Heather Zinter, owners of Tech One in downtown Milbank, announced Monday they will be closing their doors. The couple purchased the business, which focuses on computer service and quick printing, from Kathy Tyler in 2012. Kiel, who has a degree in computer and network security and computer information systems from Dakota State, handles the computer tech side of the business and Heather oversees the printing division.

They also have two employees – Cheryl Hermans and Jolene Cloos. Both began working for Tyler when she owned the business nearly 20 years ago.

The evolution of the consumer’s mindset is one of the main reasons Heather cited for the closure. She said, “The preference has changed dramatically between the time we bought the business and today. People now choose convenience over service – instead of taking in their computer to be fixed, they just buy a new one.”

Heather added, “The winter weather last year didn’t help business, but everyone up and down Main Street suffered the same.

Kiel shared, “The decision to close down our store was not an easy one and we so appreciate all of the relationships we’ve established with our customers over the years.  Because of those relationships, we do plan to continue to service some of our IT and web design customers.”

Heather stated, “Carving out time for family was a very important factor in the final decision.” They have two children Hailey in eighth grade and Kaci in third grade. Kiel also works in law enforcement and Heather is employed at Valley Queen.

Both Kiel and Heather want their customers to know they sincerely thank them for their business and hope they continue to support the community and shop local.

This week, Tech One plans to finish business projects already in progress, and then begin selling all remaining inventory and equipment. Kiel said, “The downtown road construction has started on this block. Feel free to use our back door. There’s ample parking and it’s accessible.”

The Tech One building is also for sale. Kiel stated, “Stop in to see me or contact our agent, Elli Grabow, at EXIT Realty.”
