Milbank debater Max Lightfield claimed the high-point novice speaker honor at the George McGovern Debate Tournament in Mitchell on Saturday, November 23. Lightfield scored 172.4 points – the highest of all novice debaters. He was only 2.6 points behind the varsity and junior varsity debaters.

Lightfield participated in the public forum division, which is a team event, but because his partner was home with the flu and unable to attend, he competed as a maverick – he debated alone. Rules state mavericks are not eligible to win. Coach Kathy Tyler said, “In talking to the judges, Max would have won three of his rounds. He did, however, defeat another maverick for a tournament score of 4-1.

Marion Mischel participated in Varsity Lincoln and ended up with a 1-4 tournament record.

Next up for the debate team is a novice tournament in Groton on December 3.
