St. William’s Care Center in Milbank has temporarily closed its doors to visitors. According to the facility’s director of nursing, Karen Russman, a higher number of residents than is typical for this time of year are suffering from an upper respiratory illness.

Russman says she, Dr. Denna from the Milbank Medical Center Avera, and the Sisters who manage the home, determined the ban was requisite. “If a family feels it is important to the resident, immediate family will be allowed to visit, but we highly recommend waiting,” Russman says. She also confirmed the 60s Plus Dining program will remain open.

To help control the spread of illness, the residents will not eat in the communal dining hall, but will have food trays delivered to their rooms. All plans for musical guests and public activities have also been put on hold. According to Russman, the necessity for the ban will be re-evaluated on Friday, January 31.

Avantara (formerly Golden Living Center) in Milbank report no visiting restrictions have been imposed.
